What is She Builds?
She Builds is a powerful collaboration between Rebuilding Together, corporate and community leaders who are dedicated to advancing the housing and community issues affecting women. Volunteers, homeowners, and community members come to the builds with a myriad of experiences and skills to share and learn from one another.
Becoming part of She Builds includes participation in a home and/or community center renovation led totally by women for underserved women. Prior to the actual work, home repair training classes are given to participants, teaching them the confidence and skills to maintain safe and healthy homes. There are also topics such as leadership and mentoring, to encourage community participation and empowerment. All the training sessions are women-led by women construction/home modification professionals. Participants learn basic carpentry and plumbing skills, electrical safety do’s and don’ts, home safety basics, using an occupational therapy lens to make sure your home is safe (or an older adults’ home), and other on-the-job training.
These lessons empower women to improve the health and safety of their own living conditions. Learning how to complete home repairs independently not only saves money but builds confidence in self-sufficiency for all women. She Builds brings women together to support one another and empowers them to be change-makers in their own communities.
